Miles for Mary and Ballyturk

I had a great time seeing Miles for Mary at Playwrights Horizon last night. The play from the Mad Ones is consistently funny as five high school teachers prepare for a telethon to raise money for two athletic scholarships named in memory of a student who died young. There are serious moments, too, The cast is perfect.

Balllyturk at St. Ann's Warehouse is a more challenging play, brought over from Galway. Playwright Enda Walsh has written a Beckett-like play about two brothers caught in a run down room as they act out the characters from the town of Ballyturk, which could be real or imaginary. There is a lot of frantic wordplay and movement and I admit I was ready to tear my hair out but then something happens and the play slows down and turns into something mesmerizing and strange.
