| Here's what I heard from someone connected to Rudin. Bernadette and Victor are signed for six months. The production has lined up up two additional replacement casts. The leading lady who will follow Bernadette is more of a "Broadway person" than a mainstream celebrity. After performing the show for a shorter run in New York than Bette (or possibly even Bernadette), she will headline the tour. A bigger "name" has been secured to headline the next cast and generate "Bette-like" excitement. She will close the show's New York run. |

| bway1430 posted in another "Dolly" thread below that he/she could see Christine Ebersole in the role that seems to fit-in with your description of a "Broadway person" who will be the next Dolly replacement |

| If anyone here knows Scott Rudin, remind him that DOLLY begin her start at the Fisher theater in Detroit, and if sends a company to Motown. I promise to attend once or twice a week and I'll bring friends. I purchase a premier ticket for the past Mother's day(front row) and had the time of my life. | |

| Ha, sorry I laughed after looking her up, at the thought that Stephanie Powers would still be called a celeb. But I suppose to some, and why not! But it made me laugh mainly because you seem to be including names of celebs in attendance as if they might be considering taking the role... | |

| It's Stefanie with an F She was in short-lived revival of APPLAUSE that I believe Barry & Fran were hoping to bring to Broadway But as you infer, she probably did not have the STAR WATTAGE to make it work She replaced Valerie Harper in LOOPED - it played at the Majestic in Boston Interesting to note, she was in "Die! Die! My Darling" with Tallulah Bankhead in 1965 |

| Let's let this one get up and running successfully and then re-assess. I wouldn't put too much stock in pipe dreams, regardless of the questionable source. Most people think Midler was sui generis. | |

| I agree about Midler, and you may be right that the enthusiasm collapses once she leaves. At the same time, I saw the show with Donna, and seeing it with a solid Broadway Diva giving a delicious-but-still-mortal performance showed how excited the audience was for the musical itself. In a lifetime of theater going, I've never heard the kind of applause that greeted the title song - not to mention its encore - and I've never seen an audience so enthusiastic to sing along with an overture. I think it's going to have legs, and I think they're right to be looking at a solid Broadway leading lady (and I'd vote for Victoria Clark over Christine Ebersole) who can anchor the tour. And the show is built to tour - I think the set will be much more at home in a large road house. |

| To be clear, I did not say (and thus cannot be right or wrong about it) that enthusiasm will/has collapse[d]. What I said is that we don't know yet. At the time I wrote that, someone had told me that sales for BP were soft. (I did not verify that by looking at availability or otherwise and that can change on a dime.) I do think it is highly likely that the show will do well on the road unless they totally screw up the casting. I also think we love to get a bit ahead of ourselves and to do fantasy casting, and while I don't, I do participate in fantasy baseball, and I do think the business of theatre is akin to a sport, so I am not really in any position to say too much. Now setting that aside, why has no one mentioned Nathan Lane.? :-) | |

| That's the nature of this synergy, isn't it? A particular talent, a particular role, a show that's never been revived without its original star. Things aligned. Magic happened, theatrical and otherwise ($$$). If it continues with Peters, great. It's early. |

| Not to further split this hair: but that was still a re-packaging/re-visiting of the original staging with one of the original stars' interpretations. The Midler iteration, directed by Zaks, is the first new take on the show with a new star, independent of the Gower Champion production stamp*. It's a small but telling distinction. *Directed by Lucia Victor, who'd put Bailey in the role in the late 60s. She recreated the Champion staging, the only one for that era. It was recreated again for Channing's returns(s) in the 70s and 90s. |

| let's split the hair -- this was your comment I responded to: "That's the nature of this synergy, isn't it? A particular talent, a particular role, a show that's never been revived without its original star. " It was indeed revived without it's original star in 1975 |

| I was surprised it looked better than I expected it to be, but where did "Grandma" come from? She wasn't at the wedding that was going to take place in the original. Also, Meryl's part in the sequel sounds like it's just a cameo from what she's said. | |

| It's mostly a prequel, right? So younger actors play the main characters (and hopefully sing better :)) for the most part and the original actors appear less (as will Cher - unless she appears in the prequel part as the mother!). | |

| I've read that Cher plays Meryl's mother. In her brief appearance in the trailer, it appears that she is in a scene with Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper (Sky), who are not in the prequel parts. It also looks like there's a lot in there from the original movie. Lily James is shown as pregnant in one clip, so the prequel likely isn't too much before the original. Isn't Sophie only 20 when the wedding is to take place in Mamma Mia!? It's a little confusing. | |
