They're still looking for $1.3 Billion in order to lift the theatre and put retail underneath:

That's a lot of money to raise. And Fortress, one of the partners, has been in a sticky place and was just bought by a bank. I wouldn't expect developement anytime soon. The only sure thing seems to be the city's green lighting of the project. We love our developers in nyc.

I was just in Times Square for the first time in a while and it struck me how much of a brand name retail environment its become. It feels a bit like Herald Square but hipper, younger and richer.

Fall start date would mean Spongebob has to close next summer--probably not unrealistic with the current grosses under $1M.

Why can't the show transfer to another theater.

it could

but 99% of shows don't. And it would need a big theater like Marquis or Broadway (King Kong) and probably $1M to cover transfer costs. for a show making under $1M most weeks (except holiday week), it wouldn't be financially prudent to transfer. But not all investors are financially prudent. I just doubt any theater owners would want to rent to the show since its prospects aren't that good for a lease based on percentage of gross.

I think dramedy's comment about the grosses being under $1M/wk means that he/she thinks that the show isn't making enough money to make a transfer worthwhile.

But, if the producers can find a less desirable theatre that might otherwise be dark for the period when they'd need to transfer, anything can happen.

Pull the trick Chicago used in the 1990s.

Build a new seat at a new, smaller theater, and send the first one out on the road.
