Is Harry Potter the only new plays this spring?
Posted by: dramedy 02:08 pm EST 01/16/18

I can't think of a season in the last 30 years where there was only 1 new play opening in the spring. I know theaters are a little scarce, but are there any plays waiting? i think the Hudson and limited run at Nederlander (PRetty Woman starts in July) are about it unless the Cort remodeling starts later.

Lately Off Broadway is the place to see plays. Seeing Hangman at Atlantic Stages in two weeks and Party Face with Haley Mills at Stage I was worth a visit.

one problem with off-broadway is short runs

For out of towners like me, broadway runs of 3-4 months are usually doable in a schedule. Off-broadway of 4-6 weeks usually means by the time its a must see, it is either closed or i've left town before i knew it was a must see.

Yep. Since The Minutes was cancelled, Harry Potter is the only new play opening between now and the end of the season. Maybe they scared other potential productions away?

By my count there are 10 new plays this season, 3 of which are one-man shows. That's the same number as least season but those openings were more spread out.

But it opened this Season on Broadway. (your OP did not mention Tony eligible as criterion :)) Feel free to take comment in fun.
