| I gotta say - I'd be pretty bummed if I was paying for a theater or musical theater education and training at an uber expensive, supposedly top tier school like NYU and they decided Sister Act would be one of our shows. What a waste of time for them. |

| How many shows do they do a year? If it's one of many, it's a bit different than if it's their main show. | |

| I don't know for sure but my memory says they do 4 main shows? I dunno. In my opinion, as someone who has worked professional in theater and broadway theater, and who not so long ago went to school for theater, I would be pissed if they did this show when I was in my program, and I would consider it a huge waste, especially since students do these shows as part of the program, meaning they get credits for it, meaning they not only PAY to do it but it takes up the space of other credits/classes/worthy shows for their education. Maybe it's different at NYU but I can't imagine how. |

| I'm with you! The theatre program I was in in college did Grease the year before I started the program and I remember thinking how devastated I would be for that musical to be selective for serious musical theatre training ground. Fun for high schools and community theatre, sure, bring it on. I won't be seeing this, but I also have to give them props because they put on excellent shows that I generally love seeing. And this is the exception to their programming, in my experience. Floyd Collins, Violet, Spiderwoman, City of Angels, Sweet Smell of Success, Light in the Piazza, Secret Garden, Drood, Grand Hotel. Quite a selection of interesting choices, some very meaty, some rarely done. |

| I'm not a big fan of SISTER ACT, but its score is by Alan Menken, a composer who has had major success in writing very prolifically for musical theater and film. I would think that's justification enough for NYU or some other school to do the show, plus that general type of music turns up frequently in musical theater, so the students should be given opportunities to perform it. | |

| Doing a show because the writer of it has written other better and more popular scores is not a good reason. I also disagree... they should be doing work the challenges them and gives them a chance to exercise their muscles in ways they might not get as many chances to in their early careers. Also, there are PLENTY of actual worthwhile shows for them to do in college that have the "general type of music turns up frequently in musical theater"... |

| It's a bit cynical to think of it this way, but many of these students will be auditioning for summer stock (such as it is now a days) and having Sister Act on their resume might be super helpful. | |

| I dunno... I'm pretty doubtful that people casting Summer Stock will think "Well she's great, but she was in Sweeney Todd and Nine... but nothing middling or generic with unchallenging roles that's just meant to please the audience... let's go with someone else." And even if some do, or all do, this is still not the way someone running a top tier college theater program and place of higher education should be picking shows for their students who spend a f*ck ton of money and 4 years of their youth to grow and learn and stretch themselves. | |

| Maybe I wasn’t clear. I think Sister Act, and titles like it are exactly what summer stock is doing. It’s not that students are at an advantage by doing mediocre shows. They’re at an advantage doing these mediocre shows that are currently trendy | |

Another way to look at it is that students can learn different things from doing different types of shows. Of course I agree they should also do scores/shows that are generally regarded as better in quality and more challenging, but I do think there is some value in doing a show like SISTER ACT. For what it's worth, this same program at NYU recently did AMOUR. I think it's wise for the faculty to choose a mix of different styles of shows/scores, as with these two examples. |
