I agree about Midler, and you may be right that the enthusiasm collapses once she leaves. At the same time, I saw the show with Donna, and seeing it with a solid Broadway Diva giving a delicious-but-still-mortal performance showed how excited the audience was for the musical itself. In a lifetime of theater going, I've never heard the kind of applause that greeted the title song - not to mention its encore - and I've never seen an audience so enthusiastic to sing along with an overture.
I think it's going to have legs, and I think they're right to be looking at a solid Broadway leading lady (and I'd vote for Victoria Clark over Christine Ebersole) who can anchor the tour. And the show is built to tour - I think the set will be much more at home in a large road house. |
