| Darren Criss (''Hedwig''), best known as the sweet Warbler from ''Glee,'' does a dramatic 180 and is getting raves as Andrew Cunanan, the psychopath who killed the Italian fashion designer. Despite the show's title, Cunanan is the focus of Ryan Murphy's latest miniseries. Last night's debut episode featured Will Chase as a detective interviewing Versace's lover, Antonio D'Amico (played by Ricky Martin). Annaleigh Ashford portrays Elizabeth, one of Cunanan's closest friends. And future episodes will include two-time Tony winner Judith Light as perfume magnate Marilyn Miglin; Finn Wittrock as Jeff Trail, an ex-Navy officer who becomes Cunanan's first victim, and Jon Jon Briones (''Miss Saigon'') as Cunanan's Filipino father. (Interestingly, both Criss and Cunanan are half-Filipino and grew up in California.) |

| The fact that this story contains a major character that is half-Filipino and grew up in California and that, not only is Darren Criss also both of those things, but also a member of Ryan Murphy's rep company via his roles in GLEE and a small role in AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL, made me wonder if Murphy chose to dramatize this story specifically to showcase Criss. I mean...what an amazing coincidence that Murphy happens to have a well-known half-Filipino actor who's also the right age and type for the role on speed dial, right? From interviews I have read, Murphy seems to be saying that this series was happening before Criss became involved and it was seeing Criss in HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH that convinced Murphy that he was the right actor for the part, but it just seems like incredible coincidence/serendipity if that's the way it really went down. |
