This review begs the question...

What credentials must one have to be a certified reviewer for this site? I know positions are voluntary but are there criteria that must be met?
I am sure the reviewer is a lovely person but a theatre critic who makes a statement about an actor's performance he has not seen based solely on a cast recording seems suspect. My two cents.

I had the same response. I might feel more forgiving if the reviewer were a high schooler writing for their school paper, without resources to go theatre, someone who is trying out what it means to be a critic. It also seems to me to mimic the language of other kinds of critics (like Kael, etc.) where the supposed bon mot substitutes for actual knowledge about the theatre--in the cases of Kael and others, they had earned the right to some degree of shorthand, as they had proven their bonfides as people who knew the art form about which they were writing. This just feels puerile.

Aristotle might disagree.

And even it not, what is your support for that premise?

I don't think Aristotle would disagree at all. A musical theatre performance (and the musical itself for that matter) is more than 12 tracks on a cast recording. You can't possibly asses the work by listening only to a recording. You can asses the vocal performance or the score perhaps, but not the work as a whole...which would be in line with Aristotlean criticism, no? Anyway, different strokes...

I think the Aristotle reference was to the (all too common) misuse of "begs the question" lol.

Asses??? ;-)

And it seems - while technically wrong - my usage has become acceptable (at least according to Merriam-Webster) and the original usage is listed as "formal." Language is fascinating. Thanks for the correction. I was so wrong I was right.

I agree (including that language is fascinating). I don't think M-W would disagree that it became acceptable some time after Aristotle's time. So Gary is still correct and I am happy to report that you are all still pretty.

I shall take M-W's advice and "cultivate an attitude of serene detachment in the face of its use by others". (Actually pretty good advice for a variety of situations ).
In truth, I suppose my post was, as much as anything, simply knee jerk reaction to the criticism of Bill's review which I do not consider to be confusing or ill-informed.

No hard feelings. I actually appreciate being corrected. It's how you learn.

We shall have to disagree about the review however. :)
