Once on this Island yesterday--Gorgeously realized
Posted by: Zelgo 11:16 am EST 01/22/18

I attended yesterday's matinee, and it's stunning. It more than stands up to the brilliant original cast.

Way back in the early 90's, I was just walking by the theater that was showing Once on This Island, early in its run. I had heard nothing about the show. Having nothing planned for the night, I bought a standing room ticket 5 minutes before it began. I remember the sets being sparse (a tree or two), but the next 90 minutes were pure heaven. The score is one of the most melodious ever on Bway. I know every word of the OBC recording.

I was hesitant to see the revival because I had such vivid, positive memories of the original production. But, thankfully I went. The show is wonderful and retains all its power. The only issue I have was that the sound system wasn't good enough for the audience to understand all the words clearly. I knew the script from the OBC recording, but much of it seemed muffled.
