The fact that this story contains a major character that is half-Filipino and grew up in California and that, not only is Darren Criss also both of those things, but also a member of Ryan Murphy's rep company via his roles in GLEE and a small role in AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL, made me wonder if Murphy chose to dramatize this story specifically to showcase Criss. I mean...what an amazing coincidence that Murphy happens to have a well-known half-Filipino actor who's also the right age and type for the role on speed dial, right?

From interviews I have read, Murphy seems to be saying that this series was happening before Criss became involved and it was seeing Criss in HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH that convinced Murphy that he was the right actor for the part, but it just seems like incredible coincidence/serendipity if that's the way it really went down.
