I have a good idea. Why don't you put your money where your mouth is? Fund a fucking season downtown, and I am sure they will be more than happy to make it a free for all. Where do you get the idea that a theatre can just snap its fingers and stop charging admission?

Don't ya just love backseat drivers?

I agree with you, Ryhog. I'm fairly consistently amazed at the capacity in some to hate on the Public, which to my mind is one of the few major companies in NYC that puts their money where their mouth is and lives up to their mission statement. It is absolutely possible to get free seats in the park, with the sacrifice of merely having to spend a day in an iconic and beautiful city park. The first preview of each downtown show is free via lottery, and they produce work that represents a rich variety of voices.

I actually believe they would indeed give away more downtown seats if they could...but at some point, somebody has to pay for the whole thing, and it's either gonna be ticket buyers or donors. I don't suppose it will be the OP.

And let us not forget that programs like Public Works (and the Mobile Unit, among others) are arguably among the most important theatre efforts in the city: truly making the theatre accessible to all and bringing it to those communities that would not find it on their own. I've been around a fair number of years, and I've seen the Public go through some pretty dismal periods, but what's going on there now, I am 100% certain, Joe Papp would be proud as hell about.
