Mr. Hurst, I saw the Homecoming Queen Saturday night and really enjoyed the show and your review as well. I agree with you that it was marvelously directed and acted. But, like you, I also had trouble with the flashbacks, although the audience was clued in, mainly by Kaleshi's accented English when she was younger, and mannerisms, etc. I would have like something more definitive. Maybe a change in lighting?
I also wanted to point out that Mfoniso Udofia, who did a great job portraying Kaleshi, the main character, is also an accomplished playwright. Two of her works, Her Portmanteau and Sojourners, were produced by NYTW not long ago, and I had the good fortune to see and love both of them.
I wanted to ask you ****SPOILER REQUEST **** what was the thing that Kaleshi did that was important and easily missed? If you are referred to the flashback in which she is calling out to the various men involved in the attack, I did not understand that fully during the show but my theater partner did pick up on it, as we discussed after the show. Was she calling out for them to be killed or something? Or was it something else she did? ******END OF SPOILER REQUEST****
