| Well, Thomas Mitchell won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for Hazel Flagg and as far as I know, didn't sing a note in the role (or at least not solo!). I would not identify Bacall as a singer, but as an actress who sings. Her first win was mainly against someone even less adept at singing, Katharine Hepburn in Coco (Dills Watling was up for Georgy, which had already closed and clearly was there to fill a category); second time, her only real possible competition was Chita Rivera in Bring Back Birdie (a few thought the Tonys might give it to Rivera partly because she was beloved and had not won after a few decades of being in the business and partly out of sympathy for her being so game in such a stinker), but Bacall was the "logical" winner that year--Meg Bussert, while lovely in "Brigadoon" did not have a name, and Linda Ronstadt was not viewed as an actress (and by many, as not vocally equipped for Gilbert and Sullivan, though she had many fans, as well). So, I don't think her Tony wins earn Bacall the hyphen. She made sounds while music played in the background--so did Linda Blair (or, if you will, Mercedes McCambridge) in "The Exorcist." |

| Mr. Reams does not have his facts straight on his WOMAN OF THE YEAR Merman/Bacall Opening Night story It did not open on a hot summer night in August but in March. I was there. Took pics of Ethel Merman and Carole Cooke exiting their limo outside of the Palace so that part of his story does not hold up either I am wondering if he is mixing the opening night of LA CAGE which did open in August also at the Palace, I also covered that event Don't remember the "Merm" in attendance - "celebs" I recall: Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, Steve & Eydie and Dorothy Loudon. |

| I would define a "singer" as someone whose singing you would listen to if he/she put out an album and the singing was completely divorced from anything else. I doubt a Rex Harrison album would've done any business, as brilliant as he was in the context of what he had to do in MY FAIR LADY. |

| Didn't Forbidden Broadway spoof her singing in WOTY by changing the song One of the girls who's one of the boys to One of the girls who sings like a boy? | |

| Lauren Bacall sang the way Rex Harrison did. Like a star, harnessing her inimitable delivery to a song. It may not be great singing, but it's great theatre. When Christine Baranski, a great singer, did Applause several years ago, it wasn't half as much fun. Like Harrison, Bacall was one of a kind. | |

| Yes, Gerard Alessandrini parodied ''One of the Boys,'' one of Bacall's songs from ''Woman of the Year'': ''I'm one of the girls who sings like a boy. My voice is as low as the tunes I destroy. ''I'm one of the ladies who sings like a bass. My voice is as deep as the lines on my face ...'' |

| Thanks. And wasn't a teenage Andy Williams Betty's singing voice in To Have And Have Not? I call her Betty because I met her once in my office and felt we had become fast friends because she let me live. | |

| And wasn't a teenage Andy Williams Betty's singing voice in To Have And Have Not? No, it wasn't. That's an urban legend that was debunked long ago. Yes, there were plans to use Williams' singing voice in place of Bacall's, but ultimately filmmakers decided to stick with Bacall herself. |

| She also starred in a suspense film THE STAR, playing an actress rehearsing for her Broadway musical. There were scenes of her rehearsing a musical number with the Chorus boys. James Garner was romantic lead, Maureen Stapleton her secretary, and Michael Biehn as the fan turned Stalker. I don't think it did much business but I went back for a second look and picked the dvd on sale when local Blockbuster went out of Business. I greatly enjoyed the film. | |

| Her big song at the end, "Hearts Not Diamonds" is actually pretty good, considering the Tim Rice lyrics are at times pretty laughable and the whole number does have just a whiff of camp to it (when the chorus boys join in). The really odd moment is in the abovementioned rehearsal scene, where at one point in the number, Bacall intones, rather drolly, the phrase "hot love baby tonight." Priceless. | |
