FOR BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
FOR “ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ.”

REHEARSALS COMMENCE NEXT WEEK

IN
EUGENE O'NEILL'S
FEROCIOUS AMERICAN CLASSIC

“THE ICEMAN COMETH”

DIRECTED BY GEORGE C. WOLFE

PREVIEW PERFORMANCES BEGIN THURSDAY, MARCH 22

OPENING NIGHT SET FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 26

This morning Tony Award® winner and two-time Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington received an Academy Award® nomination, his ninth nomination to date, for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Roman J. Israel, Esq. Next week, he will begin rehearsals for his eagerly anticipated return to Broadway in Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh, directed by five-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe.

Preview performances for this 14-week limited engagement begin Thursday, March 22 ahead of an official opening on Thursday, April 26 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th Street). Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased online at icemanonbroadway.com, via Telecharge.com or by phone at 212 239 6200, or by visiting the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre Box Office beginning February 5.

Writing about The Iceman Cometh in 1985, Frank Rich of The New York Times raved, “the word ‘masterwork’ is not invoked lightly. Eugene O’Neill’s tragic vision remains undiminished by time. The Iceman Cometh is a ferocious American classic that has lost none of its power to send one shaking into the middle of the night.”

Mr. Washington, fresh off his extraordinary sell-out runs in both Fences and A Raisin in the Sun, returns to the main stem in “the greatest American play” (New York Magazine) by “the greatest American playwright” (The Washington Post).

The Goodman/Robert Falls production with Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy was exquisite . Not only due to Lane and Dennehy, though they were both excellent, but due to the extraordinary supporting cast and the remarkable production/ scenic design. In my experience, rather extensive, the supporting cast can make or break this marathon of pipe dream misery.

agreed. For better or worse, I think they are again proceeding on the notion that the only thing that matters is Denzel. I say again because I remember the day I was walking down Broadway and made a right turn at 47th Street as they were installing the Raisin in the Sun marquee. The only word that caught my attention was DENZEL. Washington was below, in 1/4 the font size.

And, of course, the rather bewildering Julius Caesar.

The cast was in place before Christmas, so this is another George Wolfe/Scott Rudin publicity stunt.

IBDB shows Tammy Blachard as "Cora", as does deadline.com of January 18, 2018.

OK — one person in a play with a very large ensemble (and still unconfirmed by the production). I just thought we’d have a full cast announcement by now.

Full cast announcements often come on the first day of rehearsal for a play or musical. Of course the big names are leaked first, but it is not unusual for the full cast announcement to come so late. Also, they have still been casting a few roles this month. Not everything wa ma set before the holidays, as another poster stated.

This is probably deliberate, so they can do another press release next week. ;-)
