| One of the cherished troupers of Broadway's Golden Age (who, incidentally, is still with us at the hearty age of 97 !!) is Nanette Fabray, who also happened to play Mama in the original Broadway cast of "High Button Shoes." In addition to this credit, Miss Fabray also appeared in many other Broadway musicals and revues, including "Love Life," "Bloomer Girl," Arms and the Girl," "Make A Wish," and "Mr. President," Irving Berlin's Broadway swan song. Miss Fabray has also been a seasoned performer on television and in the movies. Many remember her as Bonnie Franklin's mother on the CBS sitcom, "One Day at a Time." She played Mary Tyler Moore's mother, Dottie Richards, on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She was Sid Caesar's costar in "Caesar's Hour," following the departure of Imogene Coca after "Your Show of Shows." She also made numerous appearances on "The Hollywood Squares" and "The Carol Burnett Show." Having suffered from hearing loss (due to otosclerosis), she became a champion for the hearing impaired. It's amazing how she kept performing for so many years (with the public mostly unaware) in and amongst numerous operations and the wearing of hearing aids. Possessing a delightful sense of humor and self-effacing demeanor, Miss Fabray, following her retirement, continued to espouse many causes and appear in retrospectives, sharing her wealth of memories from Broadway's Golden Age. Since we were mentioning "High Button Shoes" in a thread, I thought it necessary and appropriate to take the time to salute one of Broadway's greats, the warm and charming Nanette Fabray! The article was released in October of 2016, at the time of Miss Fabray's 96th birthday. I just thought it would be nice to bring fans and admirers up-to-date on this national treasure! |
