I think the movie is fantastic. It's a historical document of an important play. It features all of the major players from the original stage production.
It captures a specific moment in time. But it has always still remained relevant, even when it was under attack. As a 21 yr old gay man said to me recently, upon viewing the film for the first time: "people may pretend they are self-actualized , but MOST people I know, gay AND straight, have a lot of insecurity and self-loathing, just like the characters in the play.
The film was done as a labor of love in 1970, not as a commercially-minded project, and I'm so glad that it was done! |
