| I was unable to make this over the weekend because I am recovering from a minor heart procedure. It did pique my interest though since I was definitely a fan of Darin's and most definitely of Groff's. I hate to advocate for any future jukebox musicals but I do think that Darin's life had enough adventure and drama in it to make a good musical and Groff would definitely be better than Spacey. Alex Timbers, having worked on "Jersey Boys," one of the grittier and better jukebox bio musicals is a good choice so I think it really depends on the book. I hope this is pursued. As far as the comparison to Jackman goes, Jackman did do "Oklahoma" in London and was very successful. Although recognized as a major talent and garnering much acclaim for hosting the Tony Awards for the first time, Jackson chose not to come to New York with Oklahoma but instead appear in a newer musical. By then he had achieved popularity as one of the stars of the film "X-men" though starring in a special effects super hero movie in 2000 was hardly any indication of Broadway bankability. It was really the enormous success of his award winning performance in "The Boy from Oz," a musical which except for his performance was mostly panned. That success at the box office and the awards ceremonies really made Jackman arguably the King of Broadway (Nathan Lane could argue this though he has never sold out a run of himself cleaning a fish onstage) Groff is not dissimilar in that, though he has had success on Broadway and television, he has never really had a project to prove his singular appeal. He may be due and this may be it. I hope so. |
