| Maybe it's news to Michael that Jonathan Groff is a consummate song-and-dance man, but it's not to anyone who's followed his career. Over a decade ago, I was fortunate enough to spotlight him in our ''Leading Men'' column for Playbill.com. He had just started doing ''Spring Awakening'' Off-Broadway at the Atlantic, and he was so charming and excited about doing his first interview. It's been incredible to watch his trajectory: From ''Spring Awakening'' to ''Glee,'' ''Hair,'' ''Frozen,'' and more recently, ''Hamilton,'' ''Looking'' and ''Mindhunter.'' Along the way, he's grown so much as an actor. And he's been honing his vocal skills in cabaret, too, from Joe's Pub to Lincoln Center. I saw his very first solo concert in 2007 back in his hometown in Pennsylvania; he sang ''The Lonely Goatherd'' to a cute fainting goat from his family farm. I hope this Bobby Darin show goes far; I can't wait to see Jonathan make his ''Splish-Splash'' back on Broadway where he belongs. |
