I remember seeing WotY at the Colonial during its final weekend.
Spoke to Lauren Bacall afterwards, because I was young and wanted to say something and be suave.
I had just started a job at the Next Move Theatre around the corner (long gone-but Mary Anne Plunkett...!)
so I remember this as incontrovertible fact. It's last week-end in Boston was end of February - early March 1981. Bacall was dressed for winter. I don't think it had a hiatus or tryout elsewhere so I confirm SidL correction to LeeRoy Reams story. And it won the Tony for 1981 Best Musical so it could not have opened August 1981
"One of the Girls" - self-initiating camp
"Happy in the Morning" - unnecessary
"It Isn't Working"- everyone buzzing around like atomic particles, don't remember if this was really great or just high Bway mediocrity disguised as exhilarating |
