I greatly enjoy Jacques Brel's recording en francais. If I remember the story correctly, Jacques Brels was invited to New York to see 'his' Off-Broadway revue JB is alive and well etc..He HATED it(well, maybe just disliked). But while in town he went to see MAN OF LA MANCHA, and THAT was the show he loved, on the plane back to Europe he began working on a translation and got the rights to do a French Version.
