Choir Boy was one of MTC's "Studio at Stage II" productions. That's their developmental, new-works sort of program. It's meant to launch works to wider stages, whether the Friedman, commercial runs or theatre companies in other cities. And, arguably, all of them should be using their Broadway houses for the sorts of things that ought to be done but aren't obviously commercially viable. They have to balance those with some shows that'll help pay the bills, of course, but they also can't stick to the safe, extension/transfer-bait sorts of things.
Stage II has 150 seats, and the runs last six weeks. So at most 7200 people had a chance to see it.
They put on eight shows a season, and they don't sell an eight-show subscription, so even subscribers who saw it and don't want to see it again aren't being "forced" to buy it or see it if they don't want to. |
