I apologize - this is one of several confusing things I'm finding out.
But admittedly I misunderstood the Hangmen production as being on Broadway, I now realize it isn't. But at the same time I think it's fair to assume (though not currently accurate) that it will transfer for at least a limited Broadway run, for many reasons not least of which being the recent flurry of major interest/acclaim and awards for McDonagh and his hit film/awards darling 3 Billboards...
But even with just 6 plays on Broadway since 1998... McDonagh has a uniquely impressive record of Broadway productions of new plays (ie not revivals), especially/specifically for a writer who was unknown until 1998. (This is important to differentiate because it's why I've dismissed citations of McNally, Stoppard, Mamet, etc etc who were established even on Broadway in the 60s and 70s... not only decades before McDonagh's streak, but in a time when being a playwright of note held much more weight and built you a critic and ticket-buying audience that would grow with you and keep going to your plays and knowing your name for the next several decades, giving producers even more confidence/prestige to produce your plays on Broadway... something newer playwrights who debuted after plays were still a big draw on Broadway and cheaper to produce, and whose plays have very short runs, like McDonagh, are not normally afforded very often) |
