| I'm jumping to assumptions, i have no exposure to the score or script, but I do not think Tootsie, wonderful as it was/is in many ways as a film from 1982, would be received quite the same way today... I mean from the basic premise on. The fun of man putting on full realistic drag as a woman and doing a "woman" voice (good as he is, Hoffman's voice for Dorothy I even found silly when I was 10) is very played out by now (even more than it may have been at the time), and I know the film doesn't rely on the obvious man-in-dress comedy it might, but still. Beyond that, and more importantly, I doubt many of the musical-going audience would have that much sympathy for a man who can't get work as a man so he impersonates one to get work as an actor (and who does it better than a woman might!). I just don't think this will be as appealing to people, especially women, today. And while there's a lot of female empowerment in the movie, and standing up to men who try to exploit and take advantage of their power and privilege over women especially in the work place, which is very "now" (as it always is, but even moreso), it's problematic that it's being taken on by a man pretending to be a woman so he can take a job from a woman. Even if he's written as a "woke" man, or a man who becomes "woke" (inset whatever word you like there)... I dunno... Who knows! Perhaps I'm misremembering things about the movie, or making too much out of something... but I just feel like it's a tone deaf choice at the moment (also I'm not sure how or why it would be improved by making it a musical, but I'm open minded and generally don't think there are any rules to what could or should be musicalized). |
