Another issue with a contemporary setting is that the internet exists now. There is no way that someone in that character's position could create an entire fake person without also creating an entirely fake online history. The first thing the casting people would do regarding this great new actress that they've never heard of is to google her and then, of course, they would immediately discover that she does not exist and whatever credits she's claiming on her resume are fake.

And then there's the practical side of employment in the US, even in 1982. Does Dorothy Michaels have a SSN? A driving licence? A passport? She would always have had to provide some kind of hard documentation of her identity and I don't think the film goes into that at all. How was Michael Dorsey able to cash paychecks made out to Dorothy Michaels? Was direct deposit a thing then?
