this is a standard absurd argument...

Musicals do not, in almost all cases, propose to the audience that the characters go through their lives singing or dancing... and it's absolutely silly and invalid to put that as an argument to other facts about the reality of the story. And Tootsie isn't presented as a fairy tale or as an artistic expression in a certain form (like being told with song) of a story or experience. It presents a realistic take on a story that in reality couldn't have happened even the way it did in the movie even in 1982.

The movie IS asking us to believe that so we can go with the story. A musical is NOT asking us to believe the character actually sing and dance or have an orchestra playing or especially that their lives are trapped in this two hour performance being done literally on this stage 8 times a week.

Everything about this argument is just preposterous, I'm sorry.
