| Saying that says that musicals don't have to be good or make sense with their own world or their own rules... it says that it's a silly "fun time" and you shouldn't read too much into it or think too much about it, and nor should the writers. Poppycock! This is the same mentality that says all musicals should be comedies, and the same logic behind lame jokes like adding an exclamation point to a dark word or sad historical event because it would be SO insane that a smart or serious or sad thing be given the MUSICAL!! treatment. Ugh I hate this kind of thinking and misunderstanding of not only the art form and what is possible but also the actual history and canon of musical theater. |
