But I think the heightened and absurdly melodramatic world of soap operas is half the fun of the movie--so that Dorothy's big revelation speech is only a bit less believable than some of the silly plot turns on soaps like "All My Children" (which I followed for years in college and adult life). Also, that one speech could make a hell of a virtuoso solo/aria--with an actor who could shift "voices" from alto to baritone in an instant!
I do think it would need to be done as a period piece. I adored the movie when it came out, but even then, some of Michael's "access" to female bodies that did not know he was male made me a little queasy. I think the writers, even working in period, would need to find a few work-arounds for some of those moments. It's one thing to set the show in a less "woke" era--it's another thing to create a show that is itself not more "woke"--and the two are not (or need not be) the same thing, IMO. |
