Since TOOTSIE is going to be a musical, after all, it flashed into my mind that perhaps the story might be rewritten to have Michael, the central character, be a musical theater actor who masquerades as a woman in order to get a specific, plum role. But I guess that would be even more unbelievable than what happens in the film, since the Broadway world is so small. And it probably wouldn't make much more sense if he were trying to get a major role in a musical film, for different reasons.
Perhaps Michael could masquerade as a woman to become a contestant on one of the TV talent shows, either as a singer or a dancer, and then turn into a sensation as he keeps winning? Of course, that would be a major change from the original :-)
Whatever concept is chosen for the musical, do we think it will involve Santino Fontana singing as well as speaking in a "female voice" for multiple scenes? That's yet another really interesting question about this project. |
