I'm not sure I get the logic of the "written specifically for this thing in this medium" rule. It makes sense to say "written for this property" but if "If Ever I Would Leave You" was written for Camelot, it should be eligible for the stage award (Tony) when it's on stage and the film awards (Golden Globe/Oscar) when it's on film.
The screenplay is no less eligible because it takes all or most of the stage play and puts in it screenplay format and adds a few locations... the fact that Edward Albee wasn't credited with at least Co-Written by and eligible for an Oscar for a screenplay that is 80% or more his words is criminal.

None of this makes sense to me and only serves to punish the writers who wrote the amazing words, lyrics, or music that are not only the reason any play or musical film adaptation happens, but in many cases are the ones who wrote most of the words being used in the film, besides creating most everything the new words would be based on.
And this doesn't even take into account the complicated nature of crediting and awarding for "adaptations"... because there's an enormous difference between what it can take or what can be attributed to the talent/skill of the adapting writer when adapting a novel into a screenplay vs a play into a screenplay.
