So I'm assuming the various songwriters would be Tony-eligible collectively for Original Score.
As for ''Urban Cowboy,'' it had enough original material by Jason Robert Brown, Jeff Blumenkrantz, etc., to meet the 50% cutoff. (In fact, I really enjoyed Jason's tunes, like ''It Don't Get Better Than This,'' and I loved Matt Cavenaugh's original Act I closer, ''I Take It Back.'' )
The other half of the score included Charlie Daniels' ''The Devil Went Down to Georgia,'' and country hits by Clint Black and Shania Twain.
Instead of ruling that only the new tunes were eligible, the Tonys gave them a Best Score nomination for all of them.
I'm guessing it's very possible that none of those country artists even know they shared a Tony nomination for ''Urban Cowboy.'' |
