| Its just the hot button issue of the day, and we Americans love hot buttons. Wagner's operas are performed to great acclaim all over the world, especially in NYC. Wagner was a very out front hateful semite. The great conductor Herbert von Karajan and soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf were at the very least Hitler/Nazi cheerleaders. But this didnt take away their artistry. If we found letters tomorrow that proved that Shakespeare had sex with 14 year old boys or girls (he probably did) would we cancel all Shakespeare plays? I think not. Russians are tough on LGBT people. Yet Tchaikovsky is performed everywhere and revered. Zillions of people have seen CATS, based on poems by T.S. Eliot. Eliot was a horrid anti-semite. At a time when this led to the deaths of 6 million Jews in Germany. But we don't ban The Wasteland, or CATS. We honor the work, while we despise the political and racial ideas he endorsed. Its a complicated world. |
