| I'm with Chazwaza. If you're remaking it, why not see it from a Latino point of view? I guess it goes without saying that the new casting will be more authentically ethnic; in 1961, Natalie Wood could play Maria, but now you'd want a real Latina. By the way, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the Spanish lyrics for the 2009 Broadway revival of ''West Side Story.'' Why not give him a crack at writing this screenplay? If not him, there's Obie-winning playwright and screenwriter Jose Rivera. He's the first Puerto Rican to be an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, thanks to his script to ''The Motorcycle Diaries'' (2004). Looking for a Puerto Rican film director? There's the award-winning Miguel Arteta (''Chuck & Buck,'' ''Star Maps,'' ''Beatriz at Dinner''). This situation reminds me of ''Pacific Overtures.'' I will always love Hal Prince's original 1976 Broadway production. That wonderful cast and Boris Aronson's glorious sets and Florence Klotz's costumes hold a special place in my heart. But it was exciting to revisit that show from a Japanese point of view in 2002. The New National Theatre of Tokyo, directed by Amon Miyamoto, performed it exquisitely at Avery Fisher. |
