| Sure, it's complicated, it's very complicated. But I think you do a great disservice to current progress to compare things happening or changing in our current society with alleged actions happening within the last 0-40 years with things that there could be non-testimonial confirmation of from a time and society from 125-400 years ago. It's just a very dismissive and supremely disproportionate argument. I also think that for many it is about not supporting the work of a current filmmaker/actor/businessperson/whatever so as not to support them assaulting people in the work place that we love them for working in. To many it is a validation that abusing people and their power in their workplace especially is not a problem, and so therefor choosing not to supporting while they are still alive shows a lack of support and makes the statement that there are consequences to your actions even if you're rich or powerful and/or an artist making things people like. And frankly, Casey Affleck is a good actor but his contribution to art isn't in the same universe as Shakespeare or Wagner or Eliot or even ALW. It is very complicated, but I don't think your points or examples are actually as relevant to this particular complicated issue as you might think, because changing things NOW and going forward has very little to do with "banning" art made by long dead people who lived in different times. And for the record I'm not saying and artist's work should be banned or boycotted even if they do something bad or horrible. I'm just observing what I see as a very false equivalency in your examples. |
