| West Side Story was created by four non-Hispanic men; should we replace their work with that of Hispanic artists? I feel the same way about this as I would about rejecting Lin Manuel Miranda to write a script because he's Hispanic. And West Side is written from a non-Hispanic point of view; the show stays with the Jets far more than with the Sharks. I love the score but find the movie rather stilted, and I have the same problem with Laurents' script. I'm no big Kushner fan, but any new film version would need a screenplay, and Laurents is not around to provide one. I have no idea how Spielberg's version will be, but he is skilled enough that I'm interested to see what he does with the material - and his ethnicity, or that of his collaborators, is irrelevant to me. | |
