| Part of Israel's tacit ban on Wagner (which has been broken sometimes) refers to the fact that while Wagner himself pre-dates the Nazis, Hitler was a huge fan of Wagner and used Wagner's operas as symbols of his vicious form of nationalism. Also Israel has/had among its founding population many Jews who had escaped or survived concentration camps. It was considered rather chilling and disrespectful in Israel to feature Wagnerian music also since live orchestras in the camps used to play things like the overture to Wagner's "Die Meistersinger" as people were being led to their deaths in the gas chambers, as dramatized in the Vanessa Redgrave movie "Playing for Time". |
