I'd have to disagree. The plot engine is the same. Just as Mel Brooks eventually said that the basic plot device of THE PRODUCERS came from NEW FACES OF 1937 - even including the scene of the awful auditions.
In PHANTOM PRESIDENT, the real President is boring, and the party cronies see Tonic Seller George M Cohan who is a doppelganger for the President. So they hire him to 'play' the president so they can win the election. And Claudette Colbert slowly finds out he's not the President - but can love the new guy.
Its the same plot, with different elements. Just as the Producer was based on or inspired by NEW FACES OF 1937, DAVE was more than inspired by THE PHANTOM PRESIDENT. (Which is nOT a very good film, but allowd us to see George M Cohan sing and dance!) |
