| I didn't like that the shark girls, except for Anita , acted with an almost campy you-[ go -[girl' style(This was the Nat Co in Detroit); I didn't care for the shark girl who. in the middle of "I Feel Pretty", hit a high note for long time, then left then room-[ it made no sense to me........... In the Somewhere Ballet, just where the Rumble was supposed to be re-[enacted, they just ended the number. Renacting the Rumble showed that ,even in their dreams, Tony and Maria could not escape the hate and violence.......... In Krupke, one third of the stage space was given to a Jet, who kept saying,, no, people died, not funny, etc(Mr Laurents changed his mind about having a comic number post Rumble -[I liked the original approach.)......... In the Taunting scene, they eliminated the 1:24 minutes of THE TAUNTING. they just kept repeating the juke box recording of the Mambo. Bernstein thought enough of it to record it for the DG album. It's brief, but it's sort of the music for "America" turned upside down, Anita's dream gone haywire>'''''''''In the film(cant remember if it was in the original), one of the Sharks pitches in to carry Tony's Body off stage......... Re the Spanish lyrics, I liked them. In fact, re "I feel Pretty" I thought they should have done the entire song in Spanish(especially since Stephen J has said many times he now regrets his original, lyrics.) Also, during Krupke the onstage Jets mimed Masturbation up to the point of flinging the goo at each other at the end of the song.\ I felt so sorry for the very talented youngsters, and I don't see what the changes, other than Spanish lyric, had to do with appealing to people from Puerto Rico | |
