I realize I'm mentioning another movie rather than a play, but I think in "Shape of Water" Del Toro - a horror buff - paid a little homage to "The Tingler," a bizarre, cheesy 50's horror flick with Vincent Price (I just saw it last night being riffed by "The Mads" from Mystery Science Theater 3000). A significant character in it is a deaf/mute woman who lives above a movie theater. I'm not urging anyone to seek out "The Tingler," however, unless you're looking for some unintentional laughs.
