| Gosh, this post was truly difficult to read... how and why do you write like this? But I did read it so I'll chime in... regarding the Spanish lyrics, I think it's tough for the logic of the play. Even though a case could be made that they'd be communicating in Spanish when alone (as they are in this scene), I think A) they would just as logically be trying to speak English more to assimilate faster, B) the entire musical is meant to be understood by the audience. Do you put super-titles for the Spanish? And if so, does that mean all the English dialogue and lyrics would be in English super-titles? If "I Feel Pretty" is done in all Spanish lyrics, then wouldn't at least to pro-Puerto Rico half of "America" be in Spanish too? I assume the standard logic for it being in English even though they are also speaking amongst themselves in this scene is that the pro-America Sharks/Shark Girls (version dependent - I much prefer the film version) would be insisting on speaking English? Also for what it's worth, I'll say any time I get a chance on this board, I disagree with Sondheim on his over-dramatic and unwarranted throwing-under-the-bus of his lyrics in "I Feel Pretty" and the reality of Maria saying these words with rhymes he wants us to believe are too clever for someone speaking their second language, but which I find to be very elementary and sound a lot like the words someone learning a new language would choose. Either way, it's not so egregious as he makes it seem... you'd think he had her singing "Now" from ALNM. I think perhaps he chose this song as a sacrificial lamb so he would look like a constantly praised genius who is nonetheless able to recognize flaws in his own work. I just don't think this is as flawed in concept or execution as he makes out. |
