| Again that is not the point. I want West Side Story by Bernstein, Sondheim and Laurents as conceived and choreographed by Robbins. But if they are going to remake the already incredible movie (the only problem with which is the casting of white people in brown make-up), and have a director and writer who have no legit experience with film adaptations of book musicals, then they may as well hire at least a screenwriter who is Hispanic. You would never see a TV show these days with several prominent non-white characters and no non-white people on the creative team, because it looks bad. It doesn't mean white people can't write it, but it's more than likely that a Hispanic person would bring something to it, at least a perspective in writing the dialogue, that a white person couldn't. And this isn't writing a new musical this is adapting an already excellent musical book by Laurents... so for this film adaptation I have no doubt Laurent would agree with me and advocate for a Latinx to write the adapted screenplay. And I say this as an enormous fan of Kushner. |
