This is why my sense is that this is him trying to take himself down a notch purposefully by throwing this beloved song under the bus to criticize his own work while nonetheless being hailed (rightfully) as the greatest living lyricist and to many the greatest lyricist Broadway's ever known.
But if this truly thought the lyrics were so inappropriate for her character, why would he not re-write Maria's lyrics in "I Feel Pretty" and either insist they be used in future productions or offer them as an alternative for productions that agree with him? And write a version where she singing in the English lyrics he thinks she'd be capable of knowing/coming up with? Unless he has an I'm unaware of it... |
