| I just don't think it's "slavishly following the authoritarian dictates of political correctness" to cast Latinx actors to play Latinx characters, rather than white actors in brown tinted make-up. And I have to tell you, I am in the majority... and I can tell you with confidence that all people of color in the world are gonna be on the same page about this. This is not to knock the performances of Natalie Wood, George Chakiris and the other Sharks in the film, or Carol Lawrence and those playing Puerto Ricans in the original cast etc... but to imply that you'd only have to cast non-whites to play non-whites says one or both of two things: 1) that brown face is okay if the acting is good, 2) there were no hispanic actors who were qualified to be cast in these roles. The movie and original production (and revival) were a different time, but in 2018 I think you are just wrong if you think either #1 or #2 can be said and be true. BUT even if you do this brown-face is okay, and that you don't have to be the race of the character to be cast to play it, you should at least be able to recognize that non-white actors never get to play white characters unless they change the race of the character to the race of the actor after loving that actor for the role... and also, more to the point, there are and have been SO MANY FEWER ROLES for people of color (and specifically, I think, Latinx people) in mainstream American cinema, to take one of the roles actually written for them and given it to a white actor is just unfair and unnecessary. There is such comparatively less opportunity and representation on screen for them, why shouldn't they at least get to play the roles written as Hispanic? |
