And, at the end, he sang "There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us" rather than the correct lyric, "There's a place for us, a time and place for us." I think the little variations in the lyrics -- "somewhere a place for us," "some day a time for us," "a time and place for us" -- are subtle but important.
On the other hand, considering how Platt also changed some of the melody, I don't think adherence to what Bernstein and Sondheim wrote was the primary goal of the performance. |
