| You give her a lifetime achievement because she never won a competitive won, but not for lack of deserving a win or two. And because the roles she did perform on broadway or landmark and indelible. But you're right she did not spend her life on stage, or most of her career, and she abandoned the theater almost entirely except when her husband did Victor/Victoria, bringing the movie she'd recently starred in and won a GG for and been nominated for an Oscar for, and for the short off-Broadway run of Putting It Together. (I don't think it's fair to blame her for not starring in the MFL or Camelot movies... and she wasn't cast in the film of The Boyfriend either, so her career had a way of evening out between the fairness of the film roles vs the stage roles) But her love of musicals, regardless of what medium, I believe, as I think many do, helped the form enormously in this country. Mary Poppins and Sound of Music are two of the most popular and beloved movies in the world, and not least of all because of her performances. There's also the first Cinderella, a stage musical for TV. And her variety show. Hell, even a full recording of The King & I. And her guest appearances, to most everyone she is synonymous with musicals and a singing actress... it's not as if she stopped doing songs or musical theater in film or tv when she left the stage (almost for good) in 1962(?). That does mean a great deal. She was almost like an ambassador to musical theater, which is very helpful to keep it seen and loved in mainstream culture, even if it's for a limited selection of things. |
