| I don't mind standing against the majority, but in this case it's unearned. Although I'm against racially based hiring in general, either for old school racist reasons (we don't want their kind here) or new school ones (diversity uber allies), I get the case for it with actors. I'm not so sure your latter point is so true with Hispanic actors (Ricardo Montalban and Chita Rivera seem to have had good careers playing diverse roles), I most get the case for it with Asians; I certainly see that, despite their success with Pacific Overtures, no one ever cast Sab Shimono as Herbie, or Mako as Max Biallystock, or Soon Teck Oh as the Leading Player. Still, I don't go for it with directors or writers. |
