WHat I thought was clever about van Hove's direction of 'Network' - and that kind of director-led multimedia extravaganza isn't always necessarily my very favourite thing - is the way he very cleverly orchestrated all the different elements to transform the film into, basically, an extended theatrical exploration of the ways we consume media, and the way media *consumes us*. There were a lot of things going on that I'd usually regard as gimmicks, but they all added to the whole, and - for me - no single tech/design element was allowed to dominate.
On the other hand, there wasn't much depth to a couple of the performances, though Michelle Dockery's (let's put it kindly) innate blankness does work for the role.
I haven't seen 'The Ferryman'. |
