| How The Westons Won, set for Feb. 10 industry staged reading Under the direction of Joe Barros (Bastard Jones, Gigi, Cagney), How The Westons Won is set for an industry staged reading at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 10, at the New York Film Academy (NYFA), 17 Battery Place, 1st Floor. The reading is part of the New Works Series of NYFA’s Professional Conservatory of Musical Theatre, under the leadership of Broadway actress/educator Kristy Cates (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, Wicked). Set to a contemporary rock score with odes to Western musicals, the musical portrays children dealing with a mom’s opioid addiction. Two teenagers, left on a lonely Tucson ranch, accidentally bring to life a toy diorama with Buffalo Bill, George Custer, Geronimo, Calamity Jane and a young Native American squaw. Through interacting with the mythical characters, the family learns to deal with their dysfunction and move forward. Award-winning director and choreographer Joe Barros is again directing, following a workshop presentation last March co-sponsored by the cell theatre. Luis Villabon (A Chorus Line, Peter Pan) is the assistant director/choreographer. Joshua Zecher-Ross is music directing. Featured in the cast are NYFA musical theater students from four continents. NYFA has been working with writers, directors, producers and other artists in the New Works Series, adding to the school’s ongoing production of original musicals – including the movie musical series. The movie musical originals allow second-year conservatory students to create films in collaboration with active industry musical theater faculty as well as Broadway stars. How The Westons Won (www.HowTheWestonsWon) features book and lyrics by R.C. Staab and music by Aaron Latina. Staab’s musicals and plays include Dumb Luck (winner: TRU Voices New Musical Series 2017, Music Theatre of Madison’s 2017 Festival of New Musicals), and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Diamond as Big as the Ritz (recently featured in an industry reading). Missouri-based Aaron Latina is a professional composer, orchestrator and music director of film, musicals, commercial projects and movie trailers. Admission is free but seating is limited.
