Without comment on the performance, which I haven't seen, it would make a lot of sense for Galvin to head the tour since he's just coming off two seasons as the lead of a network sitcom. Local presenters could trot him out in local media and he would be a vaguely recognizable star that might entice potential audience members to buy tickets to a show they haven't heard of and know nothing about.
For Galvin, it's a chance to both be a "star" and have a really high profile gig to help get out from being typecast as the fey, sexless teenage boy of his sitcom, the only role that most people have seen him in. (I haven't seen DEH, but I'm assuming that Evan and Kenny, the TV character, are pretty different characters.)
I always thought that Galvin's short stint on Broadway was to warm up for the tour and earn the Broadway imprimatur, which is also going to be an advertising hook on the road (TV's Noah Galvin, Direct from BROADWAY!!). If I were the tour producer and I had a choice between an erstwhile TV star who gave a terrific replacement performance on Broadway and a newcomer, I'd take the TV guy in a heartbeat. |
