| "I stand by the idea that the money to restore the film isn't there and that's why it's not happening." I suspect your theory is correct, although: I have seen a clip of the "Once in Love With Amy" number included somewhere not long ago -- I think probably in the Loesser documentary I've linked to here -- and that clip looked like it had been restored. So maybe they just restored that section for that documentary, or perhaps it's possible that they went ahead and restored the whole movie so it would be ready for some of release (on demand, or whatever) when and if it was decided that there would be one? According to what I remember from seeing the movie many years ago on TV, I agree that it's not very good overall. Onstage, Bolger's charisma and talent apparently compensated for the fact that he was several decades too old for the role, and also that he comes across as completely American rather than remotely British. But I recall that Allyn Ann McLerie is very charming in it, and the film has some other pluses. At any rate, of course it should be available despite its flaws, if only for historical purposes -- especially because it's a very rare example of both the male and female leads of a Broadway musical repeating their roles in the film version. |
