Grey was a child stage actor in the 40's. He plays a character named Bender in the '52 Warners musical About Face -- it's not a large role but he's instantly recognizable and quite good in it. Wikipedia and IMDb don't list any other early film credits, but I could swear that I've seen him in other small roles in and around that time period, mostly in mediocre Warners musicals. I remember him in various TV specials and series in the 50's -- he had a recurring role as Spring Byington's nephew (or a similar relation) Jimmy on December Bride -- Lily was always trying to help him break into show business. It's a shame that it took so long for him to get his breakthrough role in Cabaret.
The title song is the number I was thinking of in the movie -- it's a much fuller version than what is on the OLC album. I'm pretty sure that the '52 film did not receive a soundtrack recording and I think I've been told that the original musical elements for the film no longer exist. Over the years I've had conversations with Peter Filichia as well as with a member of Leonard Maltin's staff and an e-mail conversation with Bruce Kimmel concerning the strange history of the film. Unfortunately I don't remember all the details of what they told me. |
